Has Modern Science Become Too Dogmatic?

Rupert Sheldrake’s “The Science Delusion” is one of those TED talks that will not be truly appreciated for another 50 years or so. Here Sheldrake argues that modern science has become dogmatic akin to a kind of belief system and makes assumptions about the nature of reality that is not supported by scientific evidence. This talk is quite controversial and has spawned many debates online about the merits of Sheldrake’s arguments. It should be noted that many of the TED talks we today consider to be credible and acceptable would have been roundly rejected by mainstream scientists 50 years ago. The fact is, we know more now than we did then so perhaps realizing this we can approach Sheldrake’s work with an open mind. Sheldrake in his words seeks to “set science free” and dispel the dogmas that hold us back from opening up new frontiers.

Whatever your opinion may be on the gun control debate one thing is clear someone, somewhere, will create a fully functional 3d printed gun and when they do the world will change. Small arms manufacturing could become a kind of cottage industry with people from all over the world creating not only copies of existing firearms but entirely new gun mashups, mixing ideas, capabilities and features from different designers to create an entirely new class of DIY weapons. Current designs are made out of thermoplastic powder but when the cost of more advanced 3d fabrication methods comes down the dream of the homemade printed firearm could become reality much sooner than you may think. 3D Systems Corp has created a 3d printer which uses a high powered laser to fuse aluminum and titanium powders together directly from CAD data to create fully functional metal parts. Electron beam freeform fabrication can also print durable metal parts capable of withstanding the heat and pressure demands of modern firearms which could go a long way toward creating the printed firearms industry. To some this may sound far fetched today but then again in the 21st century so do alot of things. In this Motherboard documentary Vice takes a look at Cody Wilson and Defense Distributed in their effort to create the world’s first 3d printed gun.

Those that have followed the development of fusion power over the last fifty years have always said that; “fusion is the future and it always will be”, but what if that were no longer true? What if we could make clean, plentiful fusion power available in a 100 megawatt prototype reactor by 2017? At a recent Solve for X lecture, Charles Chase of Lockheed’s Skunkworks suggests this could be possible. If true according to his time line a 100 megawatt production system could be ready as soon as 2022.

Destiny the new upcoming game franchise from Bungie promises to be its biggest and most ambitious project yet. From what’s been released thus far Destiny looks truly awe-inspiring to say the least. It is as if the team at Bungie reached into the deepest dreams of every Sci-Fi fan on the planet and extracted out the pure essence of a kind of world we always hoped for and knew was somehow possible but never expected to ever truly see or experience in any tangible way other than inside our imagination. They have taken that feeling of wonder and emotion you experience from the best of Sci-Fi cover art and fleshed it out into a world that looks lived in and plausible. A world not like Star Wars, not like HALO, not like Mass Effect but something wonderfully and refreshingly new.
